Reign and the Missing Colors

Kids stories

Reign the little Fairy and Pip the Elf search the Enchanted Forest to bring back the lost colors—and find a sparkling treasure ring at the end.
Reign and the Missing Colors

Reign was a little Fairy in the Enchanted Forest. Reign was gentle and brave. Reign had shiny wings and a tiny bell laugh.

One morning, the forest looked odd. The green leaves were still there, but they looked sleepy. The flowers were pale. Even the mushrooms seemed to whisper, “Where did our colors go?”

Reign blinked. “Oh no. Colors lost.”

From behind a fern hopped an Elf named Pip. Pip was small, quick, and a bit silly. Pip wore a pointy cap that always leaned to one side.

Pip said, “I saw the colors run away! They went swish-swish!”

Reign asked, “Where?”

Pip pointed. “To the sparkly path. Past the soft moss. Past the giggle tree.”

Reign held Pip’s hand. “Come with me. Teamwork.”

They walked. Step, step. The Enchanted Forest made tiny sounds. Drip. Chirp. Whoosh.

At the first turn, they met a snail on a big leaf.

Reign whispered, “Hello, Snail. Did you see colors?”

The snail nodded slow. “I saw a red dot roll away. It went to the puddle mirror.”

Pip gasped. “Puddle mirror!”

They hurried to a little pond. The water was still. It looked like glass.

Reign leaned in. “I see… gray.”

Pip made a funny face at the pond. “Boo! Give back colors!”

Plop! A bubble popped up. Inside the bubble was a tiny blue sparkle.

Reign clapped. “A color!”

But the blue sparkle floated away. Reign fluttered up, but the sparkle zig-zagged.

Pip giggled. “It is playing chase!”

Reign took a deep breath. “Soft hands. Slow wings.”

Reign flew gently. Pip tiptoed under it, arms wide.

“Now!” said Reign.

Pip caught the bubble like a balloon. “I got it!”

The bubble landed in Reign’s palm. Pop! The blue sparkle jumped into Reign’s wings.

Suddenly, Reign’s wings glowed bright blue. The pond turned blue too. The sky in the water looked happy.

Reign smiled. “One color back.”

They listened. Far away, a faint “ting-ting” sounded, like tiny chimes.

Pip said, “That sound! It comes from the Hollow Log.”

They ran to a big log with a door of bark. Inside was dark, but cozy.

Reign whispered, “Hello?”

A soft light answered. Yellow light. It was stuck in a spiderweb, like honey.

Pip said, “Careful. Sticky.”

Reign nodded. “I can help.”

Reign touched the web with fairy dust, just a little. “Twinkle, un-stick.”

The web loosened. The yellow light slipped free and danced around Pip’s hat.

Pip sneezed, “Achoo!”

The yellow light laughed and flew into the trees.

Reign chased, but not too fast. “Wait, little light!”

The light led them to the Giggle Tree. The Giggle Tree had a hole like a mouth.

From the hole came tiny peeps: “Hee-hee! Tee-hee!”

Pip peeked in. “Oh!”

Inside were little jars. Many jars. Red, pink, green, orange, purple. All tucked away.

Reign said, “Our colors! They were hiding.”

Pip asked, “Why hide?”

A small breeze swirled out of the tree. It sounded shy.

Reign spoke kindly, “It is okay. We need you. The forest misses you.”

The breeze tapped the jars. The lids trembled. The colors inside wiggled.

Pip said, “We will carry you!”

Reign and Pip each held a jar. They walked through the forest, placing a jar near each place.

Reign opened red by a berry bush. Whoosh! Red returned.

Pip opened green by the fern. Swish! Green returned.

They opened orange by the sunset rock. Pop! Orange returned.

Soon the flowers blushed pink. The mushrooms shone purple. The leaves woke up bright.

The forest looked like a storybook again.

The Giggle Tree dropped a gift: a small box made of acorn caps.

Reign opened it. Inside were two tiny crystal rings that sparkled with every color.

Pip said, “Treasure!”

Reign put one ring on Pip’s finger. “For my friend.”

Pip danced. “I feel brave-brave!”

Reign wore the other ring. “I feel warm and strong.”

They held hands and listened to the forest sing.

Reign said, “We did it together.”

Pip nodded. “Teamwork makes colors come home.”

And in the Enchanted Forest, everything stayed bright, and the rings twinkled at night.
