Far below the bright, busy sea, where coral castles curled like pink teacups, lived a small fairy with silver wings. Her name was Princess Kyra's Journey. It was a long name, but she liked it. “My name sounds like an adventure,” she would say.
Princess Kyra's Journey was brave in a quiet way. She did not roar. She did not splash very hard. But when someone needed help, her wings gave one determined flutter, and she said, “Let us see what we can do.”
Every morning, she flew through the underwater gardens, sprinkling tiny bubbles on sleepy sea flowers. The flowers opened with soft pops. Blue fish wiggled between the coral branches. A turtle yawned under a green arch.
One morning, the whole garden was gray.
The red coral looked dusty. The yellow shells looked pale. Even the little fish had lost their shiny stripes.
“Oh, dear,” said Princess Kyra's Journey. “Where did the colors go?”
From inside a round pearl lamp came a puff of purple smoke. Out floated Genie, the garden genie. He wore a turban made of seaweed and had a beard that curled like a tiny wave.
“I have looked in every clam, every cave, and every crab's cooking pot,” said Genie. “The colors are missing!”
“Did you look under your hat?” asked the fairy.
Genie lifted his turban. A pink shrimp was sleeping there.
“Not there,” Genie said. The shrimp snored, “Ploop.”
Then Princess arrived on a seahorse with a golden tail. She was the princess of the coral castle, and she was kind, though she worried quickly.
“My royal rainbow crown has turned clear,” Princess said. “And the Starfish Parade is tonight. Without colors, the parade will look like a bowl of oatmeal!”
“That would be a very sad parade,” said Genie.
A pale glow floated down from above. It was Moon Child, who visited the sea each night on a ribbon of moonlight. Moon Child had gentle eyes and carried a little lantern shaped like a moon.
“I saw something last night,” Moon Child whispered. “Beyond the Bubble Hills, near the Deep Blue Door, a Giant was crying.”
“A Giant?” Princess squeaked.
“His tears made cloudy swirls in the water,” said Moon Child. “Perhaps he knows where the colors went.”
Princess Kyra's Journey took a deep breath. The Deep Blue Door was far away, past swaying kelp and sleepy sharks. She felt a tiny wobble in her tummy. Still, she lifted her chin.
“We will go together,” she said. “Genie, can you make us a safe bubble boat?”
Genie snapped his fingers. Pop! A round bubble boat appeared. It had shell seats, a seaweed flag, and a little bell that went ding-ding.
“It is perfect!” cried Princess.
“It also has a snack drawer,” Genie said proudly.
The friends climbed in. Moon Child held up the moon lantern. Princess Kyra's Journey sat at the front and pointed toward the dark water.
“Bubble boat,” she said, “kindly go forward.”
The boat did not move.
“Oh,” said Genie. “You must say please. It is a polite boat.”
“Please go forward,” said the fairy.
Ding-ding! Away they whooshed.
They passed a school of fish wearing their colors like scarves. “Have you seen the missing colors?” called Princess Kyra's Journey.
“No,” answered the fish. “But we saw a huge shadow near the Bubble Hills!”
They crossed a field of waving kelp. A little octopus was tangled in a long green leaf.
“Help! I cannot find my arms!” he cried.
Princess Kyra's Journey fluttered out of the boat. Carefully, she untied one arm, then another, then another. At last, all eight arms were free.
“Thank you!” said the octopus. He gave them a shiny blue button from his treasure pocket. “For good luck.”
At the Bubble Hills, the water grew cool and quiet. The hills rose like giant round pillows. Behind them stood the Deep Blue Door. It was made of dark stone and had a handle shaped like a whale's fin.
But the door was blocked by a mountain-sized foot.
Above the foot sat the Giant.
He was enormous. His hair floated around his head like a forest of moss. His hands were as big as boats. And his eyes were full of tears.
Princess hid behind her seahorse's tail. Genie hid behind Princess. The seahorse hid behind a pebble. Only Princess Kyra's Journey floated gently forward.
“Hello,” she called in her clearest little voice. “Are you hurt?”
The Giant sniffed. The sniff made a wave that spun the bubble boat in a circle.
“I am not hurt,” rumbled the Giant. “I am lonely.”
“Lonely?” asked Moon Child.
The Giant nodded. “I found a beautiful Rainbow Pearl in the deep cave. It glowed red, gold, green, and blue. I wanted to show it to someone. But everyone saw my big feet and ran away. So I hugged the pearl close. When I cried, its colors slipped out and floated into my Tearshell Jar.”
He pointed to a jar beside him. It was as tall as a tower. Inside, red, gold, green, and blue lights swirled sadly.
“The garden needs those colors,” said Princess. “Could we please have them back?”
The Giant's face drooped. “If I open the jar, they may rush away. And then I will be alone with nothing beautiful.”
Princess Kyra's Journey looked at the Giant. He had not stolen the colors to be mean. He had been sad and afraid.
“We can make something beautiful with you,” she said. “You can come to the Starfish Parade tonight.”
The Giant blinked. “Me? I am too big.”
“You are big enough to carry the parade banner,” said Princess.
“And you can make big, careful bubbles,” added Genie.
Moon Child lifted the moon lantern. “Everyone deserves a hello.”
The Giant gave a small smile. It was so wide that three tiny fish swam through it by mistake.
“All right,” he said. “But how will we return the colors safely?”
Princess Kyra's Journey remembered the blue button from the little octopus. She held it up. “A lucky button may need a lucky job.”
She pressed the button onto the Tearshell Jar. At once, it became a bright blue tap.
Genie clapped. “A color tap! Very clever!”
The fairy turned the tap only a little. A ribbon of red floated out. She waved her wand, and the ribbon curled around the coral. Pop! The coral became red again.
Then came gold for the shells. Green for the kelp. Blue for the fish stripes. Purple for Genie's smoke. Pink for the sea flowers. Every color danced home.
The sea became brighter and brighter. The Bubble Hills sparkled. The Deep Blue Door shone like a sapphire. Even the Giant's mossy hair gained little silver dots.
But one last color remained in the jar: a warm, glowing rainbow swirl.
“It belongs to the Rainbow Pearl,” said the Giant softly.
Together, they opened the Deep Blue Door. Inside was a quiet cave full of old shells. In the middle rested the Rainbow Pearl. It looked dull and sleepy.
Princess Kyra's Journey poured in the final rainbow swirl.
The pearl woke with a gentle hum. Colors streamed from it, not only into the cave, but through the whole sea. Far away, the coral castle gleamed. The garden flowers twirled. A whale sang one happy note: “Wooooo!”
The Rainbow Pearl gave a tiny pop and dropped three gifts into the fairy's hands. There was a star-shaped pearl for Princess, a moonlit shell for Moon Child, and a golden bubble whistle for Genie.
Then it gave Princess Kyra's Journey a special gift: a small crown with seven shining colors.
“For the fairy who listened,” said the pearl in a voice like tinkling water.
The Giant received a huge rainbow scarf. It wrapped around his neck twice, then three times, then once around a nearby rock because it was very long.
That evening, the Starfish Parade began. Princess wore her bright crown. Genie blew his golden bubble whistle, and bubbles rose in the shapes of funny hats. Moon Child hung silver lanterns in the water.
The Giant carried the parade banner with two very careful fingers. It read: EVERYONE IS WELCOME.
The fish did not run away this time. The turtles waved. The octopus played eight drums at once. Princess Kyra's Journey flew above them all, leaving a trail of tiny rainbow sparkles.
When the parade reached the coral castle, the Giant bent low. “Thank you for not being scared of my big feet,” he said.
Princess Kyra's Journey smiled. “Sometimes a big problem is really a lonely heart asking for a friend.”
The Giant smiled back. He made the gentlest bubble of all. Inside it was a treasure chest filled with smooth pearls, glittering shells, and little coral crowns.
“One treasure for each friend,” he said.
Princess Kyra's Journey chose a small shell that sang when she held it to her ear. It sang the sound of the colorful sea, the happy parade, and a Giant laughing with his new friends.
From that day on, whenever the underwater garden needed help, the fairy with the adventure name fluttered her silver wings. And beside her were Princess, Genie, Moon Child, and one very careful, very cheerful Giant.
