Kyle is a boy who lives near the Iron Fortress. The fortress is big and gray. It has cold doors that go CLANG.
Kyle is small, but brave. He is also gentle. He likes to help.
One morning, Kyle holds his little tin bell. Ding-ding! It is his favorite.
Then—oh no.
The bell is gone.
Kyle looks under his blanket. He looks in his pocket. He looks by the steps.
“Where did you go, bell?” Kyle whispers.
A Fox peeks out from behind a stone. The Fox has bright eyes and a fluffy tail. The Fox is quick and clever.
“I saw something shiny,” says Fox. “It went inside the Iron Fortress.”
Kyle feels a tiny shiver.
Inside the Iron Fortress, it can be dark.
But Kyle takes a breath. “I will find it,” he says.
Fox nods. “I will go with you.”
They walk to the huge door. CLANG! It closes behind them.
Drip… drip… goes water.
Tap… tap… go Kyle’s shoes.
In a hallway, a soft cold wind whooshes.
And a Ghost floats by.
The Ghost is pale like mist. The Ghost makes the torches flicker.
“Boooo,” says the Ghost.
Kyle hugs his own arms. Fox steps in front.
Fox says, “Hello, Ghost. We are looking for Kyle’s bell.”
The Ghost swirls. “I like shiny things,” it whispers.
Kyle tries to be polite. “Please,” he says. “It is my bell. I miss it.”
The Ghost pauses.
Then the Ghost points. “Follow the echo,” it says.
Kyle tilts his head. “Echo?”
Fox cups a paw to an ear. “Listen,” Fox says.
Kyle and Fox stand very still.
Far away, they hear: ding… ding…
“Bell!” Kyle says.
They follow the tiny sound. Past a tall stair. Past a room with old chains that clink.
Clink-clink.
Fox makes a silly face. “Those chains sound like dancing!”
Kyle giggles, and his fear gets smaller.
The ding is louder now.
They reach a heavy iron gate. It is locked.
Kyle tries to pull. “It won’t open.”
Fox looks at the lock. “I can squeeze,” Fox says.
Fox slides through the bars. “Click,” goes the latch from the inside.
The gate opens.
Inside is a small chamber. On a high shelf sits Kyle’s tin bell.
But the shelf is too high.
Kyle stretches. “Almost.”
Fox whispers, “Teamwork.”
Kyle kneels. Fox hops onto Kyle’s back. Fox reaches up with a paw.
Ting!
Fox knocks the bell down, gently.
Kyle catches it. “I got you!”
Ding-ding! Kyle rings it. The sound is warm and happy.
The Ghost floats in the doorway. It looks less scary now.
“I did not want to be mean,” the Ghost says softly. “I was lonely.”
Kyle thinks. He is brave, and he is kind.
Kyle rings the bell again. “You can hear it too,” he says. “You can walk with us.”
Fox swishes its tail. “No more booing in faces,” Fox says.
The Ghost gives a tiny nod. “Okay.”
They walk out together. Tap-tap. Swish-swish. Whoosh-whoosh.
At the big door, Kyle stops.
He reaches into his pocket and pulls out something new: a little shiny key. It was tied to the bell’s handle.
“What’s this?” Kyle asks.
Fox grins. “A treasure key!”
Kyle turns it in a small box by the door. Click!
The box opens. Inside is a tiny gold bell, even brighter than before.
Kyle’s eyes go wide. “Two bells!”
He gives the gold bell a gentle ring.
Ding! It sounds like sunshine.
Kyle laughs. Fox laughs. Even the Ghost makes a soft, happy hum.
Kyle goes home with his bells, his clever Fox friend, and a Ghost who is not so lonely anymore.
